Internship: Interferometric Delay Tracking System for Petahertz Field Sampling
Are you excited by the idea of measuring time on the scale of attoseconds: one billionth of a billionth of a second? In 2023, the Nobel Prize in Physics celebrated breakthroughs in attosecond science, the field that allows us to observe electrons moving inside atoms in real time. Join our team as an MSc student to develop a dual-light interferometric delay tracking system that will make such precise measurements possible.
Inspired by recent research in attosecond beamline stabilization [Huppert, M. et al. Rev. Sci. Instrum. 86, 123101 (2015)]and precise optical delay tracking [Schweinberger, W. et al. Opt. Express 27, 4789–4798 (2019)], this project aims to develop a timing acquisition in experiments that allows us to measure petahertz electric fields [Herbst, A. et al. J. Phys. B 55, 172001 (2022).]and thereby giving us access to some of the fastest processes in nature.
Along the way, you’ll get hands on experience with lasers, interferometers, and precision optical alignment. Furthermore, you will develop valuable skills in experimental design, data acquisition electronics, and data analysis, all highly transferable to cutting-edge research in both academia and industry.
If you’re excited by the challenge of measuring the fastest events in nature, this is your chance to get involved in cutting-edge attosecond science!

You should hold a Bachelor's degree in physics or a related subject.
ARCNL performs fundamental research, focusing on the physics and chemistry involved in current and future key technologies in nanolithography, primarily for the semiconductor industry. While the academic setting and research style are geared towards establishing scientific excellence, the topics in ARCNL’s research program are intimately connected with the interests of the industrial partner ASML. The institute is located at Amsterdam Science Park and currently employs about 100 persons of which 65 are ambitious (young) researchers from all over the globe. www.arcnl.nl
At the start of the traineeship your trainee plan will be set out, in consultation with your ARCNL supervisor.
